Spenga: Get Ready to “WERK”

It’s “Summertime, and the living is easy….” Yes, maybe, but it’s not really always so easy since making a splash at the beach or the pool means donning a maillot even if it’s one that covers more than a bikini. It’s a good time to hit the gym so you’ll sizzle in a suit this July and August rather than fry like a pancake in tropical Florida.

Brian O’Rourke of the brand new SPENGA fitness studio has the solution. SPENGA, which is an acronym for Spin Strength-Yoga will open in July in a 4,000 sq. ft. facility in the Polo Club Shoppes plaza, in the former corner location of Josef’s Table restaurant.

Originally from Daytona Beach, Brian had worked in various corporate roles in Florida and Chicago prior to moving to South Florida in 2001. He most recently spent several years working at the large Office Depot Corporate Headquarters on Military Trail in Boca Raton. But it was a life change that led him in a new direction, into a career in fitness. As he learned more about the uniqueness of the SPENGA workout, Brian sprang right into action and committed to buying 3 franchises, one in East Delray and two in East Boca (5030 Champion Blvd. will be the first location) He was drawn to SPENGA’s concept of “boutique fitness” vs “big box gyms” — the large, impersonal, corporate chains. “We are the first fitness studio of its kind,” Brian said, “to put emphasis on cardio, strength and flexibility with an equal focus on all three components.”

The SPENGA program consists of 60 minute classes broken into 20 minutes of Spinning, 20 minutes of Strength Training (that is, “H.I.I.T.”, High Intensity Interval Training with weights) and 20 minutes of Yoga. The SPENGA philosophy states that “strong bodies and minds are created through the power of ride, rep and revive, and that when your fitness routine works, Life just works, too.”

Here are more advantages to the SPENGA program: Memberships are month to month without long-term contracts or commitments. And, there is a diverse choice of class times starting as early as 5am during the week until about 7:30 or 8pm each evening, and plenty of incentives such as free day trials. The facility has showers to make it convenient for attendees to take an early morning or lunch class, shower and get to work comfortably. SPENGA will also have the ability to customize sessions to meet the needs of its members. For example, if members desire a 45 minute Spinning-only class once a week, the studio will be able to accommodate.

Brian also believes in involvement in the community and has already participated in local events that encourage good health. For example, he was one of the sponsors of the “Eat Better Live Better 5K” this past May 5 at the South County Regional Park in West Boca. The event was organized by Debra Tendrich who created this local non-profit organization in an effort to help reverse and prevent childhood obesity. Brian will also participate in Health and Wellness events planned in the Polo Club Shoppes and the local area in which SPENGA instructors will offer free introductory Yoga sessions or other health-promoting activities.

The first SPENGA studio opened in the suburbs of Chicago in 2015 and there are approximately 15 open SPENGA locations with over 100 more in development nationwide. Brian has had a huge response to the pre-sales campaign for his studio in the Polo Club Shoppes. The word is out that the SPENGA program boosts endurance, strengthens muscles and restores the body through its unique combination of Spinning, H.I.I.T. weight training and yoga. So there it is in a nutshell, the keys to optimum health and fitness: cardio, strength and flexibility. In the words of co-founder Amy Nielsen, “Buckle Up! SPENGA is taking over!”
