It was the first August of the new millennium. Raul J. Rodriguez M.D., at the time still the Chief Resident in Psychiatry at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital, had just started his private practice in Boca Raton. He quickly noticed an alarming trend. Almost all of the new patients that were coming in had a severe addiction to some medication called Oxycontin.
He was presented with the challenge of managing these highly acute patients in the outpatient setting, in a manner where they would not miss any work. At that time, acute patients were handled exclusively in hospital or inpatient rehab settings.
Combining a number of the techniques he had learned in Jackson Memorial with some advanced techniques that were being used in Yale University, Dr Rodriguez developed a new type of detox that he believed could meet the needs of these clients. It worked exceptionally well and Dr. Rodriguez quickly started to develop a following.
He later realized that other clinical trends were prominent in the local patient population, especially eating disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders and PTSD. Most patients came in with a combination of 2 or more major conditions that needed full attention.
A decision was made to raise the training requirements of the clinical staff and then develop new outpatient treatment programs that could match the intensity and effectiveness of residential programs. The entire clinical staff pursued advanced training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Dr. Rodriguez continued to expand his psychopharmacological armamentarium.
Full-scale outpatient programs were developed for the specialized treatment of Bulimia Nervosa, Anorexia Nervosa, PTSD, OCD, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder and treatment resistant Major Depression. Due to the winning combination of higher-grade psychotherapy and systematically integrated continuity of care, the Delray Center for Healing starting to achieve success rates that far exceeded that which was possible in residential and inpatient settings.
The ability of a patient to keep the same doctor and therapist that they started with from the very beginning of their program, all the way through the long term outpatient maintenance phase, created a clinical huge advantage that other facilities are simply not structured to provide. Word of mouth spread and patients started to come from farther and farther away. Dr. Rodriguez continued to expand the scope of the medical options available to patients and successfully incorporated IV vitamin therapy, IV ketamine infusions, and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). A single medical building grew into a 5 building clinical campus that included a dedicated therapy building, a brain science center, an integrative medicine building, 2 yoga studios, a spin studio, and a national training center that also trains professional athletes. From this point on the Delray Center did not deviate from the path of evolution into a world class mental health facility that is capable of treating the most psychologically and medically complex cases. Necessity became the mother of invention here, with sheer clinical need sparking the development of new forms of treatment for difficult conditions and situations.
The “Trauma Bloc program”, with is a radically enhanced form of Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PET), was created for PTSD. The “Speedlab Depression Protocols”, which are clinical adaptations of pro athlete periodized interval training, were incorporated into the mood disorder programs with great success for treating depressive states. The Rodriguez Method of Opiate Detox (RMOD), which was the culmination of over 15 years of experimental research and development, became the first reproducible rapid detox method off of buprenorphine (Subutex & Suboxone) possible without the use of anesthesia.
These types of clinical innovations, along with skill, passion, and dedication, continue to yield extraordinary success rates for patients and set Dr. Rodriguez and the Delray Center For Healing apart from the rest.
