Alfa Romeo is back in the US with the 4C. It originally came with a hardtop and now introduces the Spider with a removable soft top that is quick and easy to remove. The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider name is reminiscent of the brand’s great sporting tradition. The acronyms 8C and 6C in the 1930s and 1940s distinguished racing and road cars fitted with powerful eight-and six-cylinder engines. Alfa Romeo 4C and 4C Spider model’s alphanumeric designation is a return to ‘the great Alfa Romeo’s and continues this tradition with the innovative all-aluminum, 1.7 liter, inline 4-cylinder, liquid-cooled turbocharged/intercooled, engine with dual (intake/exhaust) VVT timing with direct injection. It pumps out a monstrous 237hp enabling 0-60 times in just 4.1 seconds. The beating heart (mid-mounted engine) is in a vented deck lid with three functional heat extractors, and it’s where every other design element starts. Two muscular forms straddle the rear hood and elevate the body above the cockpit’s beltline for visual strength. At the rear are round LED taillights that blend into the muscular rear wing for a powerful stance. Further down are round dual exhaust tips and center diffuser. Each side features sculptured air intakes that create a strong and dynamic form that lead elegantly into the bi-Xenon headlamps. Also unique is the carbon fiber windshield frame that promotes strength and lightness featuring attachment points for the removable and stowable cloth roof. Leading from the windshield and down the hood are two muscular hood forms, which conclude at the signature Alfa Romeo shield-shaped grille and emblem. Alfa Romeo engineers also used state-of-the-art materials by creating the bodywork entirely of sheet-molded compound, low density, high-strength composite that is 20% lighter and more rigid than steel.
The 4C Spider looks unique, more than any other compact 2-door/2-seat sports car on the market. Thanks to its mid-engine layout, advanced technology and compact size, the new 4C Spider demonstrates precision, agility and performance including a top speed of 160mph, 1.1g of lateral acceleration and 1.25 of maximum braking deceleration. True ultra-high performance credentials!
Delivering the ultra-light (2,487 pounds), architecture needed for maximum performance and dynamic efficiency, 4C engineers looked to Formula 1 and only the most advanced supercars for state-of-the-art materials. The monocoque chassis is made entirely of unidirectional carbon fiber layers that are hand laid for extraordinary strength and stiffness. Completing the competition-grade architecture are front/rear chassis structures and an engine-mounting frame made from lightweight aluminum. In addition, a specially contoured aluminum roll bar provides mounting points for the near rear deck lid while unique upper body brackets and a high-strength steel engine compartment crossbeam maximize torsional rigidity.
Zooming out to speed is a dual-clutch, 6-speed sequential paddle shift with auto-mode transmission with Dynamic, Natural, All-Weather and Race modes. Like all race cars there is only manual rack & pinion steering for enhanced precision and feel, so on the console are mounted First (1), Neutral and Reverse gear buttons. Keeping the 4C Spider glued to the road is an advanced double wishbone front suspension with gas-charged shocks, high strength steel tubular-control arms plus a tubular anti-roll bar. The rear features MacPherson strut gas-charged shocks, with hollow piston rod & side load springs, high-strength steel tubular control arms and a solid anti-roll bar. The power-disc brakes quickly and safely bring the 4C Spider to a stop utilizing 12 inch red-painted, vented Brembo 4-piston calipers with 11.5 inch vented and opposed dual-piston calipers out the rear. For maximum traction and grip are 18X8 inch front forged alloy wheels and 19X8.5 inch rear forged aluminum wheels all wrapped with Pirelli P Zero super performance rubber.
All of these unique styling and performance features are transferred into the race-inspired, leather wrapped cockpit. An extreme flat bottom/tilt/leather-wrapped steering wheel, full color 7 inch instrument cluster, aluminum pedals, center controls canted to the driver, manual red leather high-backed bucket seats, power up/down windows, power door locks, Alpine Premium stereo, Bluetooth, USB port, iPod, SiriusXM radio, self-dimming rearview mirror and signature floor mats.
The very best technical and industrial expertise of Alfa Romeo is being manufactured by Maserati. The all-new Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is the real deal with supercar looks, a loud, burbling exhaust sound, supercar speed, handling and braking power with a race bred interior to keep any high-speed enthusiast happy. My test 4C Spider is priced at a very reasonable $71,895.00.
